Unlike typical rigid crystalline silicon panels, they’re designed to be lightweight, low-profile, and highly versatile, especially for mobile, vehicle, off-grid, and custom applications. They’re manufactured by MIPV Solar in Newport, South Wales, UK — meaning quality control, traceability, and support are UK-based.

Why are MiPV Panels So Good ?

MIPV uses CIGS technology (Copper Indium Gallium Selenide), Thin-film solar cells to convert sunlight to energy. They differ from traditional crystalline based Solar Photovoltaic systems (PV) which use heavier bulkier solar photovoltaic panels. As a result no additional support/racking is required, and fitting is by just a simple peel and stick application with no drilling etc.

MiPV panels are not ‘glass like’ they are shatterproof and flexible. Multiple diodes & cell interconnections avoid a disproportionate loss of output when shaded – unlike ‘traditional’ solar modules.

Paired with an EFTE non-stick top sheet, MiPV panels remain clean and operational with no maintenance required.

What is the difference between Ridged, Semi Flexible and Flexible Panels

Rigid panels offer a long lifespan but require flat mounting and brackets, and are quite low in Voltage output, leading to longer recharge of batteries.
Semi-flexible panels are lightweight and suit slight curves but have a shorter lifespan and can degrade faster under heat.
MIPV flexible panels are ultra-light, highly flexible, and designed to stay curved long-term, providing better heat tolerance, improved durability, and a sleek low-profile finish—making them ideal for curved roofs, campervans, motorhomes, and boats.

How do they work

MIPV (Mobile Integrated Photovoltaic) panels convert sunlight into electricity just like standard solar panels, but they are designed for direct integration onto curved or mobile surfaces.

Solar cells within the panel absorb sunlight and generate a direct current (DC).
This DC power can then be used to charge batteries in campervans, boats, motorhomes, or off-grid systems.
MIPV panels are made with flexible materials and layered construction, allowing them to bend without breaking while maintaining efficiency.
Many MIPV panels also have built-in bypass diodes to prevent power loss when part of the panel is shaded.

What is CIGS Technology

CIGS technology refers to a type of thin‑film solar cell made from Copper (Cu), Indium (In), Gallium (Ga), and Selenide (Se) — hence the name CIGS.

CIGS is a thin‑film photovoltaic (PV) technology used to convert sunlight into electricity. Unlike traditional silicon panels, CIGS cells are made by depositing very thin layers of the CIGS semiconductor material onto a flexible or rigid backing.

Sunlight hits the CIGS layer.
The energy excites electrons in the material.
These electrons flow as electric current (DC), which can be used to power loads or charge batteries.

What is Shading Tolerance

Shading tolerance refers to a solar panel’s ability to continue producing electricity even when part of the panel is shaded.

Panels with good shading tolerance won’t lose all their power if a small area is blocked by roof vents, chimneys, or dirt.
Many modern panels, including MIPV flexible panels, have built-in bypass diodes that route the electricity around shaded areas, maintaining overall output.
This is especially important on curved vehicle roofs or partially shaded installations where consistent power is needed.

Are they Heavy, How do they compare to other panels

MIPV (Mobile Integrated Photovoltaic) panels are significantly lighter than traditional rigid solar panels and lighter than most semi‑flexible panels.

Rigid solar panels (with aluminium frames and glass fronts) are the heaviest, often weighing 10–20 kg+ for a typical 100–200 W panel.
Semi‑flexible panels are lighter (typically 2–6 kg) but still use thicker backing and materials that add weight.
MIPV panels are ultra‑lightweight, often less than half the weight of rigid panels and noticeably lighter than standard semi‑flexibles of the same wattage.

The lighter weight of MIPV panels makes them ideal for:

Do My Panels Need to be South Facing

For maximum energy production, solar panels in the Northern Hemisphere are typically south-facing, but MIPV panels do not have to face perfectly south.
Slight deviations (east, west, or angled roofs) still allow your panels to generate electricity efficiently.
Modern MIPV panels are designed for mobile and curved surfaces, so they often operate on van roofs, boats, or angled motorhome roofs, where perfect south orientation isn’t possible.
Shading tolerance and flexible placement help maintain consistent output, even if the panels aren’t ideally aligned.

In short: South-facing is ideal for maximum efficiency, but MIPV panels are flexible in orientation and still produce good power when mounted on curved or angled surfaces.

Are they easy to Install

MIPV panels are lightweight, flexible, and durable, making them perfect for curved roofs on campervans, motorhomes, and boats. Their low-profile design integrates seamlessly, while built-in bypass diodes ensure power even in partial shade. They’re also easy to fit, bonding directly to your roof without the need for bulky brackets.

Warranty: MIPV panels typically come with a manufacturer warranty, usually covering 10–12 years for materials and workmanship and 25 years for performance (guaranteed power output). Always check the specific panel’s datasheet for exact terms.
